Gender as one of the social factors and its impact on the politicians’ speech (Based on the interviews of Theresa May, the former British Prime Minister)

Current research studies the concept of “gender” as one of the social factors that determine the choice of language means defi ned as more typical for female or male speech. The study focuses on the speech of Theresa May, the former British Prime Minister, the second female Prime Minister after M. Thatcher. The analysis of 10 interviews with male and female journalists is based on the classifi cations of masculine and feminine language means described in the studies of such linguists as R. Lakoff , a representative of feminist criticism of language, W. O’Barr and B.

Self-mentions in evaluating academic discourse

The article presents the analysis of Russian self-mentions – elements of authorization comprising “the voice of the author” – in evaluative academic discourse. These are phrases containing fi rst person personal pronouns and possessive pronouns (я; мы; меня; мне; нам; нас; мой; наш).

Means of Expressing Incivility in Speech Behavior of the Company Staff Members (As Exemplified in the US Serial The Office)

The article explores lexical, grammatical and stylistic means of expressing incivility in speech behavior of the company staff members. A range of linguistic and intonation means of expressing intentional and unintentional incivility is analyzed. It is revealed how impolite speech behavior can be gender-specific. The research is carried out on the example of stylized American English business communication.

How Gender Affects the Use of Organizational Discourse Markers in Popular-Science Discourse (Based on TED talks)

The article deals with the use of English organizational discourse markers which provide compositional and logical cohesion and integrity of the narration in spoken popular-science genre of TED talks. It is proved that on the level of speech organization male and female speakers using discourse markers demonstrate more similarities than differences.

Identifying the Gender Component in the Study of Lak Phraseological Units with Agential Nouns

The article studies how the gender component manifests itself in the structure, semantics and reference of the idioms represented by Lak phraseological units with agential nouns.

ACTUAL COMPUTER LEXIS IN ASSOCIATIONS OF SCHOOLCHILDREN

The composition of the so-called computer vocabulary in the associative reactions of schoolchildren is studied using the material of the Associative Dictionary of Saratov and Saratov Region Schoolchildren. It is shown that it has entered the lexicon of students of all age groups and as the students grow up, its relevance increases.

Does Gender Influence the Use of Discursive Words? (On the Material of the Written Scientific Discourse)

In the article the results of the research of gender specific use of different kinds of discursive words in the written scientific discourse are given. Gender differences have been marked in all groups of discursive words except for the organisational and structural units.

By means of statistical analysis a typical profiler is identified from the perspective of the age and self-presentation text volume. Gender «Politics» of a Female Author (on the Example of L. Ulitskaya’s Novels)

The article formulates the methodological principles for the identification of the gender constituent in the analysis of literary texts. Four novels by L. Ulitskaya show the dynamics of the actualized discursive gender model of the world and human being. The article focuses on the techniques of feminine consciousness representation in the text, on their dynamics in the process of a female author searching for the type of an ideal hero.
