The article considers one of the ways of forming the word-formative metaphor in the history of the Russian language - the loss of the primary meaning of the derived word. On the basis of an analysis of extensive material, the causes of the disappearance of primary values are established, among which archaization and changing the meaning of the morpheme are the most important.
